Speech & Drama

Our Speech & Drama class is designed to enhance your child’s creative and critical thinking skills. We utilise immersive communicative activities such as role-playing and storytelling to help your child develop a sense of creativity and we encourage all the children to express themselves. Public Speaking is partly covered in our Speech & Drama class. For the older children (age 13 onwards), there will be more emphasis on Public Speaking with some drama and performing elements to help the children improve their presentation, storytelling and debating skills.

In addition, students will learn new vocabulary. As they get older they will learn about new playwrights such as Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and J. B. Priestley. They will learn the structure of a story and how to present it. We look at improving articulation, voice projection, awareness of “space”, inflection of voice (pitch/tone). Our Speech & Drama teacher will show the children how to engage an audience.

Depending on the age group, the teacher will start with games as an ice-breaker. Then the storytelling will begin. The teacher will set the scene of the story, the students will learn how to improvise the story and present it. The children will also be given a script which will have new vocabulary, learned in the lesson and then they present it /act out together with their peers.

We pick subjects and stories that students will find interesting. Our Speech & Drama teachers tell the stories with such passion to inspire the students who, in turn, will want to learn more. It is not a question of just reading books to students – we bring stories alive, first by the teacher acting out the story and, secondly, getting the students involved.
